Planet-Connect Social Networking Site

Promoting Eco-Awareness in a Friendly Environment By and For Teens

Mar 22, 2009 Suzanne Pitner

Planet-Connect harnesses the fun and immediacy of Web 2.0 in a site by teens and for teens to help them develop their green sensibility.

Whether sustainable energy, pollution, climate change or biodiversity is what a teen is most concerned about, Planet-Connect is a social networking site where high school students can become friends with others with the same interests. Groups on the site focus on different goals, and teens can join as many groups as they would like.

Started in 2008, this website helps to encourage high school students to consider environmental issues, and work together to come up with solutions to the problems. By sharing examples, stories, and profiles of inspiring people, it raises awareness in a positive manner.

Students may upload profiles and friend each other in a safe, online environment. They earn points for participating on the website, and uploading pictures and articles. Top users are noted on the home page, and teens are encouraged to build a buddy list.

Get the Dirt! Shares Stories About Environmental Conservation

In this section of the website, readers share their stories of what they are doing to learn more about the environment or help the environment. There are stories of recycling, solar energy ideas, and work with shark conservation. Readers can comment, adding their own views and accomplishments. The News pages give updates on the latest environmental news.

How To Help in Going Green

The How To pages help teens find volunteering opportunities, start recycling or environment awareness clubs, and even how to help their schools go green.

Making Green Highlights Environmental Careers

In Making Green, career professionals are highlighted who are contributing to the environment. The next tab over is the College Connection, where students can investigate how green different colleges are, and the programs they offer. Another tab, Got Green? gives the low down on green related grant and scholarship opportunities.

Education About Green Issues

In the Hot Topic section, teens can read and comment on a variety of articles ranging from environmental health, to parks and public lands, to how icons of pop culture are adding more green to their lives.

Student Advisory Council

Planet-Connect is funded by the Weather Channel and the National Environmental Education Foundation. In addition, the site is designed and managed in part by a team of students who meet monthly via conference calls, building their leadership and communication skills.

Environmental issues are at the top of many people’s concerns these days. This social networking site allows teens to educate themselves about the environment, find careers that have a positive impact on the environment, research colleges and scholarship opportunities, and share what they are doing to make their hometowns and the planet a greener place.

For younger children, Quest Atlantis is a social networking game site that provides missions and quests that build social and environmental awareness. By harnessing the power of the Web 2.0, young people can become the problem solving leaders of tomorrow.
